Mining industry FAQ

Quick answers to common questions (scroll for more).

What is Bitcoin mining, in plain English?
Mining is the process of securing the Bitcoin network by competing to produce valid blocks. Miners run specialized computers that perform hashes; the first to find a valid block earns the block subsidy + fees.
What does “hash rate” mean and why is it important?
Hash rate is the network’s total compute power (estimated). Higher hash rate generally means stronger security and more competition among miners.
Is hash rate an exact number?
No. Hash rate is inferred from block times and difficulty, so it’s an estimate. Different data sources can vary slightly.
What is “difficulty” and how often does it change?
Difficulty controls how hard it is to mine a block. It adjusts about every 2016 blocks (roughly ~2 weeks) to target ~10 minutes per block.
What drives miner profitability?
Primarily: BTC price, block subsidy + fees, electricity cost, machine efficiency (J/TH), uptime, and difficulty/hash rate competition.
Why do miners sometimes “capitulate”?
When revenues drop (price down, difficulty up, fees low) and costs stay high, less efficient miners may shut down or sell equipment/BTC to cover expenses.
What are the Hash Ribbons signals trying to capture?
They attempt to identify periods of miner stress (hash rate weakness) and subsequent recovery (hash rate strength) using moving averages of hash rate.
Does a Hash Ribbons signal guarantee a price move?
No. It’s a historical indicator based on mining conditions, not a guarantee. Treat it as one input alongside risk management.
What is the halving and how does it affect mining?
The block subsidy halves roughly every 4 years. It reduces miner revenue per block, often forcing efficiency upgrades and changing the competitive landscape.
Are transaction fees important for miners?
Yes. Fees can meaningfully increase revenue during high demand periods, and over the long term they’re expected to play a larger role as subsidy declines.
